- Jan. 2020 — June 2020: Instructor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Mississippi
Research Interests
I combine theoretical, experimental, and modeling approaches to conduct physical acoustics and ocean acoustics research. My current research interests include:
- Underwater Acoustic Channels: the effect of time-varying ocean environments (winds, tides, currents, waves, and water-column profiles) on underwater acoustic channels; underwater acoustic communications and networking in time-varying ocean environments.
- Acoustical Oceanography: use broadband acoustics to study ocean dynamics such as currents, wind-wave interactions, internal waves, eddies, etc.
- Physical Acoustics: propagation of acoustic vortex beams in stratified fluids; reflection of acoustic vortices from an air-water interface.
Research Experience
National Center for Physical Acoustics, University of Mississippi (Oxford, MS)
Aug. 2018 — Now
- Underwater acoustic vortex beams. Modeling the 3D propgation of acoustic vortex beams in the ocean; Modeling the incident reflection of acoustic vortex beam from the air-water interface.
- Acoustic measurements of capillary-gravity water waves. Conduct acoustic experiment to measure the reflection and transmission of capillary-gravity waves. Process acoustic data processing to obtain dispersion relationship.
- 3D seismic oceanography in the Gulf of Mexico (Data Analysis). Analyzed 3D ocean seismic images to study internal waves, eddies and their interactions with the continental slope. Explored low-frequency sound propagation in a 3D marine seismic survey (e.g. transmission loss, signal coherence, scatterings).
College of Earth and Ocean Sciences, Xiamen University (Xiamen, Fujian, China)
Sept. 2015 — Dec. 2017
- Laboratory experiment: wind effects on underwater acoustic communications. Designed a controllable lab experiment (using an electric fan and water tanks) to investigate wind-wave effects on communication performance.
College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, University of Delaware (Newark, DE)
Sept. 2012 — Sept. 2015
- Data analysis: Underwater sound propagation in Delaware Bay estuary. Analyzed acoustic channel impulse responses with oceanographic measurements, particularly focusing on surface winds and tidal dynamics.
- Modeling: Wind-influenced shallow ocean acoustic channels. Combined multiple models to conduct joint atmosphere-ocean-acoustics modeling, with field measurements.
- Hand-on project: Software-defined radio (SDR) wireless communication. Built a complete wireless communication system step by step from theory (QPSK), to simulation (Matlab, Python), to implementation (SDR tools).
College of Earth and Ocean Sciences, Xiamen University (Xiamen, Fujian, China)
Sept. 2008 — Sept. 2012
- System design and implementation: Reliable underwater acoustic communications. Designed a dual-channel frequency-hopping (FH2X-MFSK) acoustic communication system, which is reliable and compact for mobile underwater nodes (including fish robots).
- Network design and implementation: Cross-layer underwater acoustic networks. Combined data link layer (MAC protocols) and network layer (topology and routing) using a cross-layer design, and implemented to hardware systems.
- Data acquisition and analysis: underwater noise and marine life protection. Collected and analyzed underwater man-made noise in the ocean (shipping, piling, explosion, wind and farm noises).
